Here is the Sound Reverser program, a “useless-ware” System 7 Drag-and-Drop application which takes a sound file containing a digitized sound and produces a new file with the sound reversed. It can provide hours of audio enjoyment! Perhaps if someone can come up with digitized samples of “Revolution Number Nine” or “Stairway to Heaven” we can hear what demonic messages they contain!
To use it, just drag a file containing a sound onto the application’s icon. The program will create a new file with a sound which plays backwards. The name of the new sound file is the name the original with a “~” prepended.
“Features”:
• The program only works with format 1 sounds that use the sampled sound synthesizer. Any other sounds will be copied to the new file unchanged. However, this seems to be the vast majority of sounds that are available, so it shouldn’t be much of a limitation.
• This version is not too graceful at handling errors: in particular, if the sound is too large it will display an alert, and not create a new file. This can be fixed by giving the application more memory from the Finder’s Get Info box. Perhaps a future version will make use of temporary memory. I might as well use this opportunity to disclaim responsibility for any misbehavior on the part of the program: you get what you pay for!
